Great Braxted is a very small, quiet village tucked between Witham and Tiptree, on and occupied by ancient Britons before the Romans came. Unusually, the main long street of the village is separated by over a mile from Gt Braxted Hall and the Norman church.
Details of Walk
Date of Walk: 29/01/2012
Distance: 2.33 Miles
Level of Difficulty: A Easy Walk
Car Park: Roadside outside post Office or at the Bottle Bank CM8 3EJ
Refreshments: Du Cane Arms
Here lie the remains of the 7th century Saxon King Sebert and this is also the church where Christopher martin, treasurer on the Mayflower, married in 1607. Braxted Park on the other hand is famous for its brick wall which goes round the boundary of the property.
The Village is situated on a ridge and the superb views as you walk stretch over several valleys down over the Blackwater to Witham and also see from langford to Maldon. The weather was really good for the time of year, blue sky and warm apart from a cool wind. We did make a mistake on this walk but by missing a turning we were able to see the pigs.
