Ingatestone is a long thin village with the A12 one side and the main railway line to london on the other side. The buildings a mixture of very old and quaint to modern commuter homes Also the almshouses are well worth looking out for and the church which is dominated by its 15th century tower.
Details of Walk
Date of Walk: 23/06/2019
Distance: 3.64 Miles
Car Park: No car park but you can park in Heybridge Road (Free) CO10 9SA
Refreshments: Plenty of pubs in Ingatestone
We choose this walk as it was a short one and as we had to go to Romford to look at a car we thought we could do this one on the way back. This walk went wrong from the start as we could not find the Tea shop that was supposed to be in a Garden centre, and we could not find the Garden centre as it had closed so we decided to park in Heybridge Road.
We booted up and left the car heading down Hebridge road to Burnthouse Lane where we turned left to go under the railway bridge and just after we came out the other side we turned left at a footpath sign and then across a field heading towards the left hand side of a wood then we had to cross a bridge into another field.
We then came to a road where we had to turn left and follow the lane which was called Hall Lane and then pass Beacons farm. I said I would have to take a photo of the barn and put on Holden whatsApp group and say that we had just seen one of Neil's builds as we could tell by the roof. The as the lane turned to the left we carried on and onto a concrete track and as the concrete path runs out we carried on a well walked cross-field path to the river. But when we got to the river we were not sure to turn left or right and of cause we turned right which after a little while we realised we had gone wrong and had to turn round and walk along the river bank to a wooden bridge which took us over the river and onto Buttsbury Road where we turned left and climbed the hill to St Mary's Church.
We thought this was a good place to have lunch and we sat down in the porch when we had finished and as got up to leave somebody from the church came up the path and we started talking and she said that there was a bench just round the corner that she had given to the church in remembrance of he late husband who liked the views from here, shame she had not come along earlier as that would have been a better place to of had our lunch.
We set off again following the path to the left of the church on a well-walked path to the bridge, we were now walking part of the other Ingatestone walk we had done. Once over the bridge we walked slightly up hill along a field path to Ingatestone Hall. When we got to the entrance we turned left on to the road and then right at a footpath sign which took us on to a well-walked path which believe it or not we had walked this bit before on the Mountnessing walk. We had to go under the railway line and along a path between houses to bring us out onto Heybridge Road and it was just left and walk back to the car.
