Details of Walk

Pleshey comes from a old French word, plesseis, meaning an enclosed place. This name was given by the Normans - in Saxon times the area was known as Tumblestown. To this day all the dwellings in the village are within the castle's ramparts, which measure one mile in circumference.

To this day all the dwellings in the village are within the castle's ramparts, which measure one mile in circumference. The Normans built the castle, but they built it on the earthworks of the mount and moated court that the Saxons laid out. There is no sign of the castle any more than just the mount.and moat.Six hundred years ago Pleshey enjoyed its richest period with its own mayor, market and over 40 shops. Its lord was the duke of Gloucester and uncle to King Richard II. In 1397 Richard II resentful of his uncle's power, visited Pleshey and had him lured away to be seized and later murdered in Calais.

The White Hart dates back to the late 15th century and we came back the next week for a meal and took Neil and Nicola for Neil's birthday treat, it is so quaint inside with low beams and log fires burning. The walk was mainly a road walk but a long quiet country lanes without traffic still makes a pleasant walk. When we got to Blunts Farm you see the chickens in their run and the end part of the walk you go along part of the Essex Way. At the church I decided to take a photo of both of us outside the church using the timer on the camera but I had used my set of keys to level the camera and it was not until about 20 minutes later much further down the road I realised I had left them on the church wall luckily enough they were still there. The little green park area by the moat is a nice setting to sit and relax after your walk with the ducks in the moat.
