Stondon Massey is famous for having been the village home of the father of English music, William Byrd, who lived in the village from 1593 till his death in 1623. As usual you start from a pub which was called The Bricklayers Arms.

We walked round the out skirts of the village which is mainly made up of wheat fields and horse paddocks. On a junction with a green in the middle there is a old whipping post and people who offended the rules of the land, found themselves trapped and sometimes taunted for their crimes unable to defend themselves. See photos unfortunately there was not a whip or stick handy and we finished the walk with a drink at the pub and as usual Christine had a shandy and I had a cup of coffee.
