Well this is the last walk in the book No 30 but don't worry we have the next edition Woodham Walter is a small parish situated 2 1/2 miles west of Maldon. surrounding settlements have grown up years including Spring Elms, Little London and Curling Tye Green which is where we started the walk from at The Cats pub where they have 2 large cat statues out the front and they sometimes have steam engines, fairground organ and classic cars on show which are the landlords collection.
Details of Walk
Date of Walk: 10/10/2010
Distance: 4.18 Miles
Level of Difficulty: A Fairly Easy Walk
Car Park: The Cats CM9 6LS
Refreshments: The Cats and The Bell
We walked round the out skirts of the village which is mainly made up of wheat fields and horse paddocks. On a junction with a green in the middle there is a old whipping post and people who offended the rules of the land, found themselves trapped and sometimes taunted for their crimes unable to defend themselves. See photos unfortunately there was not a whip or stick handy and we finished the walk with a drink at the pub and as usual Christine had a shandy and I had a cup of coffee.
Being the second week of October the weather was gorgeous and really warm with blue skies. Along the walk we came across to different mushrooms that we had not seen before one was red with spots and the other one had a really long trunk if that is what you call it have a look at the photos it looked if it was a skyscraper in the mushroom family. We walked through Thrift wood and all along the path you were walking over chestnuts, and at one point it was like a carpet, so we started collecting them so we could roast them when we got home., this was a first for us both collecting chestnuts. In the wood we came along a lady with two Jack Russells and had a chat in fact we were there 20 Minutes chatting. The walk also took you across a golf course and in fact you had to go across to fairways making sure you were not in the path any golf balls that had just been hit.
